Onions
Market garden: The onions (see above) and leeks are growing well in the greenhouse. We have managed to plant out some of the onion crop. The first planting of peas and beans are starting to sprout and the first of the Swiss chard has been transplanted.
The other transplants (cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, etc.) will have to wait for warmer weather!
Poultry: The first batch of chickens are out on pasture. They are enjoying fresh grass everyday. Fresh MacDougall Meadows very tasty pasture-raised chicken will be available weekly from June 9th to mid November at the Halifax markets. The two Metro pick-up locations are the Halifax Forum market on Windsor Street and the Historic Brewery market on Lower Water Street (yes we have a stall there as well). There will be a monthly delivery to the South Shore (exact days to be decided). The order form has been revised and should be easier to navigate.
The laying hens have arrived and are settling into their new quarters. Farm fresh eggs will be available at the Brewery market.
Pork: The pigs are now out on pasture. Fresh pork will be available weekly starting mid July.
Cattle: MacDougall Meadows is delighted to announce that Dory the dunne Dexter cow has given birth to a healthy baby “boy”. Mother and baby are doing well.

Our newest addition
We are patiently waiting for Dublin (our other Dexter heifer) to give birth.
And that is the news from Between the Rows.
